Book Recommendations

Want to learn more about music, teaching music, practicing with children, and the power of music? Here are some titles I have read and recommend:

How to Get Your Child to Practice…without Resorting to Violence by Cynthia Richards. (This book helped me select an instrument for my first daughter, who played harp. I recently trained in Kodàly music under Cynthia. She’s marvelous!)

Good Vibrations: The Physics of Music  by Barry Parker. (Fascinating!!!)

Nurtured by Love by Shinichi Suzuki. (A world-changing book by the author of the Suzuki Method. I read it years ago as a young mother and again in my Suzuki Violin teacher training.)

The Power of Music: Pioneering Discoveries in the Science of Song by Elena Mannes. Absolutely fascinating! This book contains a review of some of the recent studies regarding neurology and music and is so readable (or listenable–I listened to it first!). Mannes inspires serious reflection on how powerful music is in our lives. Much information is becoming available as we study music scientifically and the way it affects our brains and bodies.
